Why We Don't Get What We Want

The numbers line up, 5:55

And they wish they were truly alive

An instant where they think it’s achieved

They argue their side, but they aren’t believed

Broken bones, remind her of her youth

And she wishes she knew the truth

Could it be that it’s truly finished?

But the words were said, long after the love diminished

The numbers line up, 4:44

And he wishes he had more

A quiet sigh comes from within

When he realizes it didn’t happen

Out go the candles, one by one

And she wishes for someone

As moments pass it sinks in

It could never possibly happen

The numbers line up, 3:33

And he wished the moment to be

Forever, with her, his beautiful rose

But it isn’t, and that’s how it goes

Down falls the penny, blink and you miss

And she wishes, for just one last kiss

Forever wasn’t what she chose

But she stays alone, that’s how it goes

The numbers line up, 2:22

And you wish it would happen for you

Wants, desires, it’s all frame of mind

But you don’t seek, so you won’t find

Found yourself an eyelash, now just blow

And wish that everything, you did know

The beginning, the end, omniscient

But imperfection is heaven sent

The numbers line up, 1:11

And he wishes for just a piece of heaven

You got it, you want more, couldn’t you tell?

You’ve wished yourself your own personal hell

A shooting star; watch it burn

And wish for a purpose for which to yearn

But wishes will get you none of the above

So just stop wishing, wishing for…
