Music Like It Wasn't

She liked her men like she liked her music:

Loud, obnoxious, and left you feeling nauseous

And she could do better, perhaps a heart like his

And she never ceased to remind him of this

It wasn’t what she said, but how she said it

And it wasn’t how she said it, but what she did

And it wasn’t what she did, but when she did it

And it wasn’t how it started, but how it wouldn’t quit

He liked his women like he liked his music:

Moving, rhythmic, to make it almost euphoric

And he could do better, but he didn’t really want to

And he never ceased to be thinking about you

It wasn’t what he said, but how he never said it to her

And it wasn’t how he said it, but I guess it kind of was

And it wasn’t what he did, because he did everything for her

And it wasn’t how it started; it was how they weren’t together

She liked her men like she liked her music:

In her head, almost controlling, but never consoling

And she could do better, perhaps a soul like his

But she could never seem to understand this

It wasn’t what she did, but whom she did it with

And it wasn’t whom she did, but why she did it

And it wasn’t why she did it, but how she didn’t care

And it wasn’t that she didn’t care, but you can’t expect her to always be there

He liked his women like he liked his music:

Worldly, but low key, and absolutely free

And he could do better, perhaps in time he would

And he never ceased to believe that he really could

It wasn’t what he did, but how he always made you remember

And it wasn’t from whom he hid, because that could change whenever

And it wasn’t why he did it, because he did it to everyone the same

And it wasn’t that he didn’t care, it was just the way he played the game

They liked each other but there was never any music

Free flowing, glowing, but they had no way of knowing

And they could do better, though neither really could

But they never ceased to threatened the other that they would

And it wasn’t what was wrong, but why it was wrong

And it wasn’t why it was wrong, but how it had been so long

And it wasn’t really that they hated each other

It was simply that we were never meant to be together
